THRiVE: A New No-Fee Chequing Account from ING Direct

It has been long speculated that ING Direct will introduce a no-fee chequing account to complement its existing high-interest savings accounts and Streetwise mutual funds. The announcement today that ING Direct is launching THRiVE, a new no-fee chequing account makes that speculation a reality. THRiVE, which ING Direct is hoping to have up and running in early 2011 has the following features:

1. No-Fee Daily Chequing: No monthly fees. No deposit, withdrawal or transfer fees. Unlimited bill payments and Interac transactions. First chequebook is free. Account will pay a modest 0.25% interest on balances of less than $50,000 (Hey, it’s at least better than the big fat zero that TD Canada Trust pays).
2. ABM Access through the Exchange Network.
3. Free e-mail Money Transfers.
4. Free Overdraft Protection up to $250. No fees or interest on overdrawn funds up to $250 provided it is paid back within 30 days. Accounts that remain overdrawn for more than 30 days attract a $2.50 fee for every 30 days the balance is negative. A NSF fee of $25 kicks in for overdrawn funds above $250.
5. Bank drafts can be ordered online and delivered to your home for a fee of $10.

While we have plenty of choice when it comes to high-interest savings accounts, President’s Choice Financial still remains the only major game in town when it comes to no-fee chequing accounts (Citizens Bank briefly offered a no-fee chequing account but shut it down in less than a year). Consumers who already have a PC Financial account will see very little reason to switch because though ING Direct’s fees are lower for some features, the savings may not be substantial. For instance, e-mail money transfers cost $1.50 at PC Financial. Quebec residents will be pleased to know that unlike PC Financial products, the ING Direct no-fee chequing account will be available to them. Current clients of ING Direct can register for a preview of THRiVE through their online account or register through your185.ca.

Update 1: Reader Michael pointed out that the Exchange ATM network is more extensive than CIBC’s (PC Financial clients have free access to the CIBC ATM network). A quick check revealed that while I can find just 5 CIBC ATM machines within a 5-km radius of where I live. Within the same range, I can find 42 Exchange ATM machines (compatible with ING)!!!!

ING rolls out online no-fee chequing accounts

No-fee chequing accounts are the great idea that just won’t click in Canada.

Truth is, they haven’t worked out great for banks or consumers in the U.S. market, either. And yet, online bank ING Direct will introduce a new chequing account Wednesday that charges no monthly fee, period.

* E-mail money transfer is the better way

Thrive Chequing allows you to make unlimited debit purchases, pay bills, write cheques, make withdrawals at 2,400 bank machines across the country and even incur a small overdraft without paying a cent in fees. Thrive will be available Sept. 14 to 10,000 people who register online (at your185.ca). This pre-launch will be used to generate feedback to be incorporated into a full launch early in 2011.

There are already a few no-fee chequing accounts available in Canada, notably from the online bank President’s Choice Financial and Coast Capital, a B.C. credit union. With ING, the question is whether the Dutch-owned bank’s marketing savvy can break the category wide open in much the same way as it did when the high-rate savings account was brought to Canada back in 1997.

ING claims that Canadians pay an average $185 per year in monthly bank fees (hence the Web address for signing up for the pre-launch). In a poll it commissioned, 38 per cent of participants said they were disgusted by their chequing account fees, and 66 per cent thought the fees were unfair. Three-quarters said they would switch to a no-fee, online savings account if one were available.

Benefits

“Our customers are screaming for this product,” said Peter Aceto, president and CEO of ING Direct Canada. “We have a regular dialogue with our customers about what they would like from us in the future, and they’ve consistently been saying they would like us to produce a chequing account.”

ING already offers no-fee chequing accounts in the U.S. market, as well as in such places as Spain, France and Germany. Thrive was developed for the Canadian market and offers a few notable benefits:

-No minimums: Many banks offer free chequing to clients who maintain balances of $1,000 or more.

-Interest is paid: Okay, it’s not much at 0.25 per cent for balances of up to $50,000, 1 per cent for $50,000 to $100,000 and 1.1 per cent for higher balances, but it’s still more than almost all chequing accounts offer.

-Generous and innovative overdraft protection: ING’s Whoops! Protection covers clients for up to $250 in overdrawn funds with no fees or interest provided the money is paid back within 30 days.

No-fee chequing accounts are common in the United States, but there’s been a catch. Spend more than you have in your account and you trigger monster overdraft fees in the area of $35 (U.S.). Banks in the United States have just been prohibited from automatically charging these fees, which means less revenue for them. As a result, some are reducing the availability of no-fee accounts.

Rival: PC Financial

Here in Canada, no-fee chequing accounts were introduced back in 1998 by PC Financial, run by Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and the Loblaw supermarket chain. A perk of dealing with PC Financial is that you get reward points useable for free groceries.

The small number of copycats inspired by PC Financial suggests there’s a finite number of people interested in banking strictly online so as to avoid fees. “No-fee chequing accounts were very big for PC Financial, which attracted about 1.5 million clients,” said David McVay, a banking industry consultant with McVay and Associates. “But the momentum seems to have waned.”

Online bank Citizens of Canada offered an excellent no-fee chequing account a couple of years ago, but it couldn’t prevent the bank from being shut down by its parent, Vancouver City Savings Credit Union.

Mr. McVay further noted that free banking is already available to students, seniors and anyone who can afford to park some money in a chequing account in order to eliminate service fees.

People comfortable with online banking should thrive with Thrive Chequing. Beyond the unlimited transactions, overdraft protection and competitive interest, the benefits include easy transfers to and from other banks and a unique feature that fires off an e-mail to you every time you make a withdrawal (helps you keep track of your balance and quickly notice unauthorized transactions). Customers who need a bank machine have no-fee access to The Exchange Network, which includes National Bank of Canada, HSBC Canada and dozens of credit unions across the country.

Can ING make no-fee chequing hot? Mr. Aceto said the company has established a franchise in Canada for offering products that are simple, cost-effective and easy for people to manage themselves. “We think we’ve done the same thing with Thrive Chequing.”

ING Direct (Canada) review - Best Internet Bank in Canada (10 out of 10)

The Bottom Line Although its a project i think that will mature in time, its worthy of notice. You should setup a account for yourself.

I have been wanting to do this for some time, i use internet banking with my present 'brick and mortar' bank, and it was the next natural step.

Why did i choose ING Direct?

1. Simplicity at its best, you just can't get better. You can use your existing bank account to move money into your new account. The First transaction is ussually done by mail, writing yourself a check, i wrote mine for $2.00 (cause i was still a little sceptical). One difference though, i decided that seeing as i was in Toronto, Ontario anyways, i would show up at the local 'branch'. No, they dont accept cash, they have all the pamphlets you might need for information, real faces to talk to, and 'java' and muffins to-boot. Internet access to do your banking, and even a ATM machine (or 2) to carry on your transactions.

2. Wow, no cost withdraw of my money, this doenst cost me a cent, but only when i use the local ING Direct Machine. (Ussually found at a Local Canadian Tire Store, something like WalMart, only better;) ).

3. Downside is the charges you get hit for at the Interact networks. I don't have the prices in front of me, mainly because i have only just recieved my ING Direct Card. Oh, and another downside... you can't use it like your bank card at your local merchant's.

4. Customer support is awesome, i have never sat on hold with them for more then 5 minutes (and this is MAX.).

5. Savings only :( This is something that i consider to really suck, but I guess that opens a whole new bag of worms for them.

6. Yes, they also have Business Accounts, although you have pretty much the same requirements as a brick and mortar bank, only you also need to have a 'brick and mortar' bank to use to transfer the funds, (must be a business account too)

7. $25 free when you open a new account and make an initial deposit of at least $100!!! Just enter the following Orange Key during the application process: 35934724S1

The setup was flawless, and the customer service was always very helpful, managed to get setup real quick and easy when i got my snailmail notice of the initial ($2.00) deposit.

Oh ya, and dont forget the *high* interest rate you recieve on your cash.

One other thing, they also have a easy 'forced savings' plan, you can setup a daily, weekely, bi-weekly, and monthly payment schedule from your bank account, into your ING account. Even easier to save.

--o-o- November 4, 2006 -o-o--

Have you ever stopped and looked at your brick and mortar bank account statements? How much to you see for interest when you have over $500 in the account for a month or so... Well, I can tell you this now. I have never seen so much interest. Honestly, I have never seen more then 3 cents paid out in one transaction. Guess what, even at 2.75% (Current rates) I have seen more then $4 in less then 6 months. While it may be nothing for most people, the fact that *I* got this, ... Well, I will be saving MORE money in the future, unused funds each month will be moved to INGDIRECT for sure!!

How does the ING Direct Orange Key Coupon work?

I have recently discovered ING Direct Canada, and I have to say that they are my new favourite bank. I have not been a fan of the major banks gouging their customers with service fees every time I use my debit cards or any other services these banks provide. I have learned with ING Direct Canada, that as I signed up as a new customer, I could be entitled to a $25.00 sign up bonus if I had an ING Direct Orange Key code. ING has been offering this Orange key code program to encourage their current customers to get people they know, whether friends, family or associates, to sign up as a new customer. The program essentially gives both the person referring and the person being referred a small bonus as long as a certain minimal deposit of $100 is made.

The Deposit:

Currently this minimum deposit amount is $100 and it can be deposited into any type of account with ING Direct Canada. This includes pretty much any account that ING offers whether it be RSP, TFSA or regular savings or no-fee checking accounts. This even includes the unmortgage that offers very competitive rates. The only catch is you have to be a new customer.

How The Bonus Works:

In the past the values of the referral bonus have varied to as little as nothing to $13 but the current program the reward is $25 bonus for your original sign up. DO IT BEFORE THE DEAL ENDS!! You will receive the bonus within 24 hours of depositing your initial deposit (minimum of $100) into your ING account. Initially your first deposit will be by check that is sent in via regular mail. Once your account has been set up you can electronically move your money between your accounts. It's that easy.

Signing Up & Getting The Bonus:

How does ING Direct know that you have been referred to sign up for the account and how do you get the money for being referred? That's where the ING Direct Orange key comes in to play. When you first sign up for your account there is a field in the application form that allows you to input the Orange Key code. A word of advice, make sure you use a working orange key code. You can cut and paste the following working orange key coupon code: 35934724S1. This code signifies that you have been referred by an existing customer and you qualify for the $25.00 bonus.

Getting the referral code (Orange Key): 35934724S1

As already stated as far as ING is concerned it doesn't really matter where you get the code just as long as you use it when sign up, to verify that you are a referral. A word of caution with doing that is simply that the ones you might find may no longer be valid so just be sure that the number has been posted relatively recently. This is where this blog comes into play. We update regularly with new codes to ensure you're getting your $25.00 bonus.

You can cut and paste the following working orange key coupon code: 35934724S1. This ING Orange Key which I know is valid since I received my ING Direct Bonus in my Investment Savings Account withindays of sending in my initial deposit. ING Direct Canada is my new favourite bank, not only because of the $25.00 bonus, but because of their higher savings rates and NO FEE CHECKING ACCOUNTS. I will continue to use them for a long time to come because ING doesnt believe in being billed to pay for a bill!

ING Direct – TFSA With No Fees

We recently used an Orange Key to set up an ING Direct Tax-Free Investment Savings Account (TFSA) in my wife’s name to use as our emergency fund and saving for annual expenses like Christmas gifts and property taxes. We decided to use ING Direct for three reasons:

1. Unlike some other banks, this is a TFSA with no fees
2. The current 2% is a great rate compared to most other banks’ high interest savings accounts
3. Using an Orange Key (35934724S1) gave us a free $25 when we opened the account

ING Direct Orange Key: 35934724S1

TFSA with no fees

Some banks have TFSA accounts with either administration fees or withdrawal fees. We chose ING Direct because they have no fees. This is especially important in these early years of the TFSA since the fees could wipe out any tax savings from the interest on a relatively small balance.

High interest rate

While a couple years ago, I wouldn’t be calling 2% a “high interest rate”, in the current economy this is about as good as it gets for a savings account. While everyone loves their low mortgage lending rates, the low interest rates have a negative effect when you’re trying to save money and earn interest on it. That said, ING has a good track record of providing one of the best interest rates at any point in time, so I’m hoping to see this rate increase eventually and stay ahead of the competition.

ING Direct does also offer a Tax-Free Guaranteed Investment (GIC) with up to 3% interest. While this account didn’t suit our needs since we plan to access the money, it could be a great way to set up a GIC ladder inside your TFSA.

Orange Key for a free $25

Being able to use an Orange Key for a free $25 helped to break the tie between ING Direct and Ally, which is another good choice for a TFSA, also with no fees and the same interest rate. Once you have your own account, you also get an orange key to refer friends and family and not only do they get $25 added to their account, buy you will get $25 as well!

If you want to sign up for a TFSA at ING Direct, you can use Orange Key 35934724S1 to get a $25 added to your account for free! Once you sign up, just send them a cheque for you initial deposit of $100 and once they finalize your account you’ll have an extra $25 added. The Orange Key is also good for accounts outside of a TFSA, including high interest savings accounts, GICs, and mutual funds.

ING Direct Review and $25 Referral (Orange Key) Bonus

Recently, I was surfing the net doing research on high interest tax free savings accounts and when I came across ING Direct, I noticed that they are offering a sign up bonus of $25 when depositing $100 initially (click here for coupon code, or keep reading below). So I thought, what the heck, I’ll sign up for an account and review the service for MDJ readers, and the $25 sign up bonus doesn’t hurt either.

What is ING Direct?

ING direct is an online bank (covered by CDIC) similar to the PC Financial high interest savings account. That is, you do all your basic banking elsewhere, but you can transfer money back to forth to ING’s savings accounts to take advantage of their relatively competitve interest rates.
Account Offerings

TFSA

ING Direct is currently offering the highest interest rate on a TFSA in Canada – 3% (new in Jan 2010). This is a regular savings TFSA, not like a trading TFSA like what some discount brokers offer. In addition to regular savings TFSA, they offer mutual fund and GIC TFSAs.

Childrens Savings Account (CSA)

A really neat feature with ING is their Childrens Savings Account. This account is offered for existing ING customers with children. Basically, it allows a high interest savings account for the child while having it linked to the parent account. To put icing on the cake, ING offers a $25 bonus (until Sept 30, 2009) for all CSA accounts.

High Interest Savings

ING’s high interest account is similar to the PC Financial account except with a slightly higher interest rate. This is the account that I opened to claim my $25 freebie.
The Fees

As far as I know, there are no fees when banking with ING direct.

The Sign up Process

I must say that the account setup was painless and relatively quick. All they needed was basic personal info along with basic banking info from which the client will be transferring money from. After that, a personal cheque needs to be mailed in to verify banking information. From the beginning to end, the whole process took about 3 business days, with about 20 minutes worth of “work”.
$25 ING Direct Signup Referral Bonus

In order to get the $25 ING Canada freebie,

1. Start your application.
2. When the form asks, use the orange key code 35934724S1 (new – July 2011)
3. Deposit at least $100 with your initial bank verification cheque .

After your account is opened, you’ll notice the $25 bonus appear in your transaction history.

Final Thoughts

As I already have a PC Financial high interest savings account that I use often, my initial reason for opening the ING Direct account was for the $25 freebie which took 20 minutes of my time. However, after seeing their offerings, and their higher interest rates, I may use this account as my “fun money” account.

As well, I am seriously considering opening a Childrens Savings Account with them as it seems like a great tool.. and the additional $25 bonus is calling my name!

Anyone else with ING Direct? What has your experience been like?

PC Financial or ING Direct?

Admittedly, I am a person who deal with banks almost exclusively over the internet and phone. Years ago I was a customer of RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) who I effectively choose by default due to it being the only bank in the town I lived in. Since then I have decided to switch to switch to online banks due mainly to the fact that there are no fees and they have higher Savings & GIC account interest rates.

Initially I chose to go with PC Fincancial, the bank which is linked to the Canadian grocery chain Loblaws (although it has many different names). And later decided to add ING Direct to my mix.

While selecting a bank I had a fair amount of decision making to like you do always. Which leads to the typical questions:

* What is so great about ING Direct?
* What is so great about PC Financial?
* Which one is better?

What’s so great about ING Direct?

Savings Rates

While not the absolute top for interest on a savings account, ING Direct typically offers interest rates near the top of all banks in Canada. Additionally, ING frequently has some promotion going on where you can get a higher interest rate for at least a few months.
Mutual Funds

As I have already stated in a previous post ING’s streetwise mutual funds are a pretty quick and simple choice for anyone starting out in mutual fund investing. Although I think it’s probably a good choice also for those people who have been doing it a long time too.
Free debit card

You get an ING debit card that you can use to withdraw from your account. I personally have never used it since I primarily use my PC debit for most transactions.
Some free money

For those people who are new customers and have a promotion code to enter (ie Orange Key)

No fees

As with most online banks they do not charge you for any of their services.

What is so great about PC Financial?

(Almost) Full Service Bank

PC Financial offers all the services of a brick and mortar bank. You can have a checking account, choose from one of several savings accounts, GICs, a MasterCard, etc. PC uses CIBC bank machines so you don’t have to pay for ATM fees at any of their machines.

I say almost because I know of people who have switched from PC Financial due to them needing services that are not offered.
Free checks

When you set up a checking account you will be sent a free book of checks. And you can get additional checks whenever you move (with your new address) or when you run out.
PC Points

When you use your card and most especially you PC MasterCard you get free points which can be redeemed against your purchases at any Loblaws stores or their subsidiaries. The most significant is the points you get with your MasterCard which comes to the equivalent of 1% cashback.
Savings rates

Like ING, PC Financial has fairly high interest rates, although at the time of writing ING is higher.

Few fees

For most services PC doesn’t charge, such as using your debit card, monthly account fees etc. However, they do charge for the typical bank extras such as NSF (non sufficient funds) and like, which I would imagine ING does too.

Which one is better?

Hands down, ING is best.

How Can I Get an ING Direct Orange key $25.00 bonus for Opening a Streetwise Mutual Fund

Join up with this working Orange key code: 35934724S1

Since January of 2008 ING Direct Canada has ended up offering Canadians, just like you, their very own type of mutual funds which they have chosen to call ING Direct “Streetwise” Mutual funds. It’s my opinion this new portfolio of funds has brought Canadians a excellent investment opportunity which has not been available. In this article I hope to resolve the following questions:
  • What are Streetwise Mutual Funds?
  • How do they differ from other fund offerings?
  • More notably, how could they be my greatest investment option?
  • How can I use an ING direct orange key to recieve at ING Direct verified orange key bonus of $25.00 just for opening an account?
What is an ING Direct Streetwise Mutual Fund?

They’re is one of three mutual funds currently offered by ING Direct Canada. These funds invest exclusively in market indexes; specifically Canadian Bonds (DEX Universe Bond Index), the Canadian market (S&P/TSX 60), the US market (S&P 500) and International Stocks (Morgan Stanley Capital Inc. EAFE).

As stated there are three funds Income, Balanced, and Growth each having progressively higher risk then the previous with correspondingly potentially higher returns. One way of thinking of it’s the closer you are to when you plan on spending the money the less risk you want to take. So if you had been planing on spending the investment in the next couple of years you’d probably want to invest in the Income Fund, or if your time line was more like 20 to 30 years away you’d probably consider the Growth Fund. This of course leaving the Balanced one somewhere in between. Note that there are many other factors to selecting your level of acceptable risk and this only takes one into account.

How do they differ from other fund offerings?

A number of other banks and fund companies provide index funds that is true. The 2 biggest advantages that a majority of advocates of index funds are as follows:
  • Index funds have historical performed better then managed funds
  • They have lower management fees than other managed funds which means you keep more of the income and your investments growth that much faster.
What this means is that the option for an average Joe to invest in mutual should be an easy choice for even the most novice investor. With ING Direct Canada, they should easily be able to choose to invest exclusively in Index Funds. However, you still may wish to get proper exposure to the various markets. This is where the Streetwise Funds comes in, not only do the ING Direct streetwise funds invest in Indexes they already invest in several so it’s not necessary to buy a variety of varied ones from many other providers.

More importantly, how are they my best investment choice?

As previously stated, not simply are Street wise funds invested solely in indexes additionally they invest in various different indexes. The degree that each of the 3 funds invest in each index is continuously maintained which means that once you start investing in one of these funds you don’t have to do anything whatsoever unless you decide that you want to alter your degree of risk (ie buy a different fund).

Along with this, ING Direct Canada has put a cap on the management expense ration (MER) to 1% (which at this time of writing this article was essentially .8%) this amount is actually as good or better then that is presently being offered by most other index funds that invest in only one index.

To my knowledge the only real other good alternative is the TD e-series or iShares ETF.

The TD e-series portfolio offers essentially exactly the same option as the ING Streetwise funds, however they’re MER is really a bit greater so your returns would likely be lower. But if you would like the ease of dealing with a primary bank and possibly an improved online banking system, you might choose it instead.

As for iShares they don’t actually offer mutual funds but rather what are called ETF (Exchange Traded Funds) which is really a fancy way of saying you purchase mutual funds through the stock market. It is more work to purchase them and you can only invest in one index at any given time but at an MER of around .17% it could be worth the extra effort and additional work.

ING Direct Canada is providing you the chance to use this Working ING Direct Orange Key
35934724S1

Simply by entering this number in when registering with ING Direct Canada you’ll receive $25 within 24hrs of opening an account with a balance of $100. What a better way of growing your investment! I have signed up to start saving using their ING Streetwise funds and it has been very simple and easy along the way. Customer support online and via telephone have been outstanding. I highly recommend using ING Direct Canada.

ING Direct Canada Says 100,000 to Use New Account This Year

The Canadian unit of ING Groep NV expects at least 100,000 people to sign up for its new no-fee checking account this year, Chief Executive Officer Peter Aceto said.

ING Direct Canada plans to offer its Thrive checking account, which pays interest and doesn’t carry monthly fees, across the country beginning March 9. The Toronto-based lender has been testing the account over the past five months with 22,000 clients.

The bank, which doesn’t have branches and has operated in Canada for 14 years, wants to gain market share from lenders such as Royal Bank of Canada and Toronto-Dominion Bank in selling mortgages, mutual funds and other products. Aceto expects to have a million clients in Canada doing day-to-banking at ING within a few years.

“I think it will make a modification of how Canadians will look at ING Direct,” Aceto said in a telephone interview today. “Certainly our goal over the next few years is to have at least 50 percent of our two million customers doing day-to-day banking with ING Direct.”

According to the Canadian Bankers Association, 60 percent of Canadians pay C$15 ($15.43) a month or less on monthly service fees, while 28 percent don’t pay any fees.

To advertise the product’s launch, the bank will issue checking accounts with C$7,000 in them to four Canadian celebrities including former National Hockey League player Trevor Linden. The celebrity who gives away money the fastest through social media and other means will receive C$15,000 towards the charity of their choice.

ING Direct Improves THRiVE Chequing Account

Last year we saw ING Direct introduce the THRiVE Chequing account, a no fee chequing account that answers all the needs clients have been asking for.

Ever since the release of this chequing account, ING has been updating various aspects of the account to make it even more suitable for customers.

One thing I love about ING Direct is that fact that they are on top of their social media, which in turn allows them to receive great feedback from clients and use that to improve their products.
What are the latest updates?

The latest improvements made to the THRiVE Chequing account include improvements to their Payee Search. The improvements include:

* the ability to suggest any missing Payees online

* the ability to sort your Payees on the “Pay my Bills” page

One of the biggest improvements lies within the THRiVE Chequing account hold policy. As it stands, in the past the hold policy consisted of the usual 5 business day wait period, however ING Direct developed a method where clients in good standing can have access to their money without the wait.

The change that involves the hold policy lies in how money gets into your account. Normally, the levels above involve you depositing money through an ABM, however it will also include bank to bank transfers. This makes it much easier to bank with ING Direct, and allows you to have access to you funds virtually whenever you need it once you have built a good relationship with the bank. With the hold policy now included bank to bank transfers, there is realistically nothing stopping you from using the THRiVE Chequing account. On another note, ING recently opened a new state of the art Cafe in downtown Toronto, which offers anyone a combination of Starbucks and the Apple Store, allowing people to get their banking complete in a great environment.

It is great to see ING being so interactive with their customers on social media, listening to what they want to see in the products and producing results.

I love the new changes to the THRiVE Chequing account, and cannot wait to see what further improvements ING makes to their products.

ING's THRiVE is the Best Bank in Canada!!!

I got my first real bank account when I was 15, it was a chequeing account with no fees, relatively high interest and consisted purely of online and phone banking. That was in 2000, a full decade before ING’s “game changing” THRiVE. I’m not knocking THRiVE, it’s a fantastic option to the chequing accounts that actually cost money.

My first legit job was in the garden centre of a Loblaws, I got the job just as PC Financial launched. PC Financial was Canada’s first bank to give full services without a brick and mortar presence. Ever since I started banking I used only the Internet and I never paid a service fee. The idea of going in to speak with a teller for anything other than to get a replacement card seems ridiculous.

ING’s service is something everyone should consider, but to people I’ve talked to and if you read the media releases it seems that they have invented the wheel 2.0. PC Financial did this with the help of CIBC at a time when many, including myself still used dial-up.

I still think THRiVE is a great alternative to traditional banking and I say everyone should consider it; it’s just not that novel. ING is still leading the way in consumer banking technologies though. In mobile banking, they were the first to release apps on the major platforms, where as PC finacnail doesn’t even have a mobile version of their website.

UPDATE: ING Direct just introduced a EXCELLENT new promotion. If you open a new account and deposit at least $100, you get $25 for free. Simply enter the following code (called an Orange Key) when prompted.

After reading nothing but positive ING Direct reviews, I finally took the plunge and signed up for an ING Direct Orange Savings Account. It was fairly painless, as online banking applications go. The standard questions were asked including name, address, ssn, etc. ING Direct was recently rated as the most secure online institution and it showed. The series of security questions were unique and enough to make identity theft difficult.

I was immediately pleased with the straightforward interface. ING Direct has long been competitive with other online banking institutions, and though others may offer a slightly higher yield, I am planning to maintain the bulk of my savings here because of the other benefits.
ING Direct Review

ING Direct offers a couple perks over similar online banking institutions. I enjoy the ability to give our savings account a nickname. Having a name for our accounts helps me identify with the savings goal more. For instance, having $1,500 in my “Emergency Fund” account means more to me than $1,500 in “Account #123456789.”

The ability to create subaccounts at ING is a nice feature for consolidating various targeted savings accounts into one bank, and one master control screen. These subaccounts at ING are really just separate savings accounts, but because they are all tied to your customer ID they appear as a list on your ING customer homepage. Over time I plan to add accounts labeled “Christmas Shopping,” “Vacation,” and “New Sofa.” We can then create some automatic contributions into each of these funds based on the targeted savings goal. For instance, my wife and I would like to save about $600 in our Christmas Shopping account so we plan to automatically transfer $50 a month into this account. With our savings on auto-pilot the money is moved automatically without any hassle-factor. When the targeted savings goal is within reach we will schedule an electronic withdrawal back to our linked checking account.

Targeted savings accounts are a great way to pay for things that occur once or twice a year, or for one-time goals such as our “New Sofa” account. Insurance premiums, car tags, and taxes all have a way of sneaking up on us and wrecking a monthly budget. By using a savings account reserved for each specific purpose these events will no longer be budget-busters, rather a simple electronic transfer to your checking account.

I encourage you to consider signing up with ING Direct today. Their customer service, interface, security features, and account options are second to none.

ING Direct Review

Several years ago, ING Direct made a name for themselves when they introduced the Orange Savings Account. At the time, the concept of an online savings account was as foreign as its owners, Dutch-owned ING Group, and many folks wondered if the offer was a scam. At the time, I know my credit union’s savings account APY was sub-1% and here ING was offering 2.60%! It was unheard of!

I had my reservations though. First, the company was Dutch so I didn’t know if that had any implications (it doesn’t). I was new to managing my own money so I was always wary of doing something stupid (I still do stupid things). Lastly, I didn’t want to jump too quickly even with the ING Direct $25 referral bonus dangling out there. Fortunately, my comfort with all things online coupled with my inexperience pushed me towards opening an account at ING Direct and I’m glad I did.

Since then, many banks have begun offering high interest savings accounts and ING Direct has ceased to be one of the top interest rates out there… but it still has some merits and a warm place in my heart.
Account Signup

Signing up for an account takes mere minutes and is actually one of the strengths of ING Direct when ING first started. Back then, opening an account online was practically unheard of. You always had to visit a physical branch so that a teller or account representative could go through the screens themselves. Now, a quick account signup process is the norm.
Account Features

One feature that is noticeably absent from many other online banks is the ability to add new accounts as quickly. Once your first account is opened, subsequent accounts can be added in mere seconds. Everything managed through the same login, which recently benefited from a face lift, and it really does help you save more.

For example, opening new savings accounts are trivial and, given the ability to name them whatever you’d like, you can easily open an account for the purposes of a saving goal. If you have a big expense, such as a vacation, coming up in the future you can set up an account specifically for that. Once you set up an account, you can establish automatic transfers between all of your linked accounts (ING Direct accounts are automatically linked). So, you could set up a monthly transfer from your checking account to your ING Direct savings account and then intra-ING Direct transfer from your main ING Direct account to your vacation savings account. This transferring feature isn’t unique to ING Direct but the ability to add new accounts so easily is.

ING offers a CD laddering form that makes CD laddering a cinch. While the interest rates aren’t especially competitive, the 12 month CD is 3.40% APY and the 60 month CD is 4.00% APY (compared to FNBO Direct’s 3.50% APY high yield savings account), this feature is the only one of its kind I’ve seen available anywhere. When their CD rates become more competitive, I can see this form getting a lot more use.

Overall, I was very pleased with ING Direct. While their rates have lagged their competitors lately, I think the intuitive and friendly interface really puts new online banking customers at ease. I have accounts at Emigrant Direct and HSBC Direct and their banking screens look very antiseptic and austere. While you can’t judge a book by its cover, ING Direct does a great job putting the softer elements into its interface that puts someone at easy.

ING Direct Bank of Canada Orange Key Review

If you just need an Orange Key and don't care to read a review, here is a working orange key:

ING Direct has been offering a $25 promotional signup bonus for anyone who opens a new account with an initial deposit of $100 or more. You have to be a new ING Direct customer and open a new account to be eligible for this. I was looking for a good bank account and decided to check out ING when I heard about the orange key bonus. I opened an ING Direct chequing account just to get the $25 bonus, and am very happy with the account. I was so happy that I decided to do a short review of ING Direct and the ING Direct Refer a Friend Orange Key promotional offer. When somebody signs up using your orange key (a friend, family member, or stranger) you both get $25 added to your account if the person makes an initial deposit of $100 or more.

Some people think the ING Direct orange key bonus is a scam, but it isn't. You can learn more about the program on the official ING Direct website by clicking the link: http://www.ingdirect.ca/referafriend/

ING Direct offers many different free no fee banking accounts, which is what initially attracted me to them. Once I heard about the $25 ING Direct orange key promotional signup bonus, I was hooked. I have been using the account for a few months and am very pleased with my ING Direct chequing account. I also opened an ING Direct Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) and am equally pleased with it. There are no hidden fees, and like the guy with the accent says, ING Direct helps you to save your money.

Here is a list of accounts offered by ING Direct:
Thrive Chequing Account
Savings Account
Tax Free Savings Account
Mutual Funds
Mortgages
Business Accounts

For full details on the different types of accounts offered by ING Direct, look here: http://www.ingdirect.ca/en/signmeup/index.html

The ING Direct Tax Free Savings Account and Thrive Chequing Account really are great, the ING website is very clean and easy to use, and ING as a whole makes everyday banking easier for me. The ING Direct website also has great security, and the customer support is excellent. I forgot my passwords once so I had to call an ING Direct agent to retrieve it, and the person who answered me was very professional, polite, and was even bilingual, speaking both English and French, which is great for Canadians or people in Canada. The $25 orange key bonus was also a big help since I am a student and did not have a lot of money to start with. The $25 bonus was added as soon as ING Direct got my $100 initial deposit. The no fee ING Direct Thrive Chequing Account is probably the best bank account I've ever had because there are no fees, which means I can do unlimited transactions. There is even something they call Whoops Protection, which is basically the ING equivalent of overdraft protection. If you accidentally write a cheque for more money than you have in your account ING protects you and gives you the money as long as you pay it back within a certain amount of time. You can find the terms of the Whoops Protection on the ING Direct website.

Overall, I have had an excellent experience with ING Direct and loved the $25 Orange Key bonus.

ING rolls out online no-fee chequing accounts

Nο-fee chequing accounts are thе grеаt іdеа that just won’t click іn Canada.

Truth is, thеу haven’t worked out grеаt fοr banks or consumers іn thе U.S. market, еіthеr. and уеt, online bank ING Direct will introduce a new chequing account Wednesday that charges nο monthly fee, period.

Thrive Chequing allows уου to make unlimited debit рυrсhаѕеѕ, pay bills, write cheques, make withdrawals аt 2,400 bank machines асrοѕѕ thе country and even incur a small overdraft without paying a cent іn fees. Thеrе are already a few nο-fee chequing accounts available іn Canada, notably frοm thе online bank President’s choice Financial and Coast Capital, a B.C. credit union. Wіth ING, thе question is whether thе Dutch-owned bank’s marketing savvy can brеаk thе category wide open іn much thе same way as it dіd whеn thе high-rate savings account was brought to Canada back іn 1997.

ING claims that Canadians pay аn average $185 per year іn monthly bank fees (hence thе Web address fοr signing up fοr thе pre-launch). In a poll it commissioned, 38 per cent οf participants ѕаіd thеу were disgusted by thеіr chequing account fees, and 66 per cent thουght thе fees were unfair. Three-quarters ѕаіd thеу would switch to a nο-fee, online savings account if one were available.
